Thankfully we had some better gardening weather this week. Dryer, sunnier and warmer. The garden waste bins (I have two) are nearly full four days after they were emptied. I have another 10 days to go before they are emptied again. That's how much weeding I've done. I could show you a picture of some of them, but I'd have to explain that they did really grow like that in just a week, honestly, and you wouldn't believe me.
So on to the pretty stuff then. This tulip is 'Mieke Telkamp'. I thought that sounded like someone's name, and indeed it is. She was a Dutch singer famous for her version of Amazing Grace aparently. That was a bit before my time though. It has quite a short stem, so not the most elegant, but it has a lovely peachy flush to the base of the petals.
In this border in the front garden, I decided to add some daffodils last year to give a bit of colour before the tulips. They have of course, only just opened. I have Thalia in a couple of places in the garden already, so I choose something different for this space.
Or so I thought ,,,,,
I chose 'Tresamble' and it has two flowers per stem like Thalia, hangs it's head like Thalia and may just have a slightly more flared cup than Thalia.
Back to tulips again and here is 'Rems Favourite'. I do love a stripy tulip and I realise that I should photograph them against an inky dark backdrop to evoke a Dutch Old Master painting. Look- it's Purple 💜.
The crab apple blossom opened in the sun this week. I do love that stage when some are still wrapped up in their bright pink buds, but that moment was over very quickly.
Look at the colour of that sky! We haven't seen enough of that blue.
Down in the woodland the trunks of the trees look so beautiful when the sun falls on them and they throw their shadows across the ground.
Erythronium Pagoda is flowering with its golden yellow lily like flowers.
And finally we will finish with more tulips. You know you buy the fancy ones and you know they will be a one hit wonder, but you leave them in the pot and shove them in a corner because you can't quite bear to through them away? These ones have come back for a second year to my surprise. Perhaps they enjoyed the baking they got last Summer. The dark flower with the copper edges is Tulip Slawa.
I have some more tulips to bore you with but they will have to wait for another week as I have now run out of room. Thank you for reading and I hope to see you next week.
Don't forget all the Six on Saturday posts can be found on Garden Ruminations where Jim collates all our garden ramblings.
That crab apple blossom looks stunning against the blue sky. 'Tresamble' is rather lovely with it's very pale yellow trumpet and I'll have to look up the singer Mieke Telkamp later!
ReplyDeleteThat blue sky was rather fleeting.
DeleteYour tulips are so pretty and you have chosen some lovely varieties, I do like the stripey purple one.
ReplyDeleteI do like stripey, but I think I like stripey and frilly even better, so Parrot ones for me next year.
DeleteIt's interesting to have presented the N.'Tresamble' because it's rather 'Thalia' that we often see. This flower is indeed beautiful and seems to lean less downward.
ReplyDeleteThey are very similar. My first thought was that I must have planted Thalia again despite meaning to get something different.
DeleteI really like your Tulip 'Mieke Telkamp'. I could do with some pale tulips in the garden, I don't think I have any at all this year.
ReplyDeleteYour crab apple photographs are great - the blue sky makes the blossom pop.I too love to see the buds just before they open. It's such a shame that all this beauty lasts such a short time - though perhaps we would be less appreciative if it remained throughout spring.
'Rems Favourite' is not a shy tulip! I like your idea of putting it against a dark background, perhaps with strong side lighting - now, there's a project for you. Create your own Old Master. :D
I've they've not been spoilt by all the rain we are having today, then I will have a go next week!
DeleteN20 here. Never bored by a tulip and I love that first white one. The garden is looking full of promise. Crab apple blossom is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteThat's good to know - I realised I have quite a few more to come.
DeleteOMG those purple and white Tulips do look like a Dutch master painting (PS I want some!) ! <3 It all looks lovely.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sarah
DeleteI don't know about Rem's Favourite, but it is certainly mine, I love the purple and white combo.
ReplyDeleteI had some a couple of years ago which were red and white in the brochure, and did eventually fade to red and white, but spent most of their time being yellow and red. Can you tell I wasn't pleased?
DeleteYou/we can never have too many Tulips. Looking forward to your next selections for us. The Crab Apples are beautiful

Thank you. There will be more tulips next week then.
DeleteMieke Telkamp is really special, but so are the other blooms. Your garden path and garden design are really special, too.
ReplyDeleteThank you Beth.
