MULBERRY LEAVES AND LONG BORDER VIEWS

It may be Autumn but we have had another mild week here, with overnight temperatures staying above 10 degrees.  Nevertheless the leaves are changing colour and the plants have definitely decided that that's it for this year.

Up in the Knot Garden, the Mulberry tree is turning a gorgeous buttery yellow.

The Ash trees are scattering their leaves over the Long Border.

Although the Dahlias and Salvias are carrying on flowering, they have been blown about by this week's windy weather and are looking a little ragged. I did think of picking some for a vase in the house, which given the rain forecast for this weekend would have been a good idea.  Did I get round to it?  Did I heck as like.

The border looks even more past it Autumnal from the other end.

Some hostas are still looking fine.  Others have completely yellowed.  This one is in an interesting half way stage which I rather like.

Another leaf showing pretty colour changes is the Persicaria 'Red Dragon', which is loosing its deep red colouration in the lower leaves, but retains the rich colour in the stems for now.

The occasional solitary rose bloom is still there to admire.  This is Munstead Wood.

I'm ending this week's round up on the subject of pots and planters.  After a wait of many months these planters have finally arrived.  They replace some wooden ones which had had their day.  I've moved over the clematis which I'm hoping will revel in their new roomier quarters.  There's a Comtesse de Bouchard in one and a Madame Julia Correvon in the other.

I'm clinging onto my remaining flowering pots for a few days longer but they should be heading into the greenhouse very soon.  I just need to clear out the rest of the tomato plants, remove the strawberries and find room for them somewhere, give the greenhouse a wash .......To do lists   Aaargh.

So that's what I'll be doing if the weather holds.  I hope you have a good gardening weekend if that's your thing.  Until next week .....

PS Don't forget to check out the the Propagator, the Marathon running host of Six on Saturday.

  1. I really like those long shots of your garden -- so much space! I could not manage so much, but I envy it all the same. The ash and mulberry trees are lovely. Your new planters are v smart too, especially the towering bits. I would like some more of that type of thing, just haven't found any here yet that are reasonable and a good shape.

    1. I'm glad you enjoyed seeing the long shots of the garden. In the Summer I think I go around with my camera pointed downwards all the time.

  2. Your new planters and supports are quite handsome, and I wonder whether some nice tulip bulbs are also hidden in there somewhere

  3. Thanks for sharing your lovely autumnal colours. Munstead Wood is a great rose - mine have only puny flowers left now but yours is a proper buxom one.

    1. It deserved a spot this week for that fine flower, but it's the last one for this week I think.

  4. I do like the square pot with the obelisk (Is it zinc?)
I too featured the autumn colours of the hostas ... snap!

    1. I saw your hosta Fred. They are very similar. The square pot is described as zinc, although I think that is just a surface coating.

  5. It’s great that the dahlias are still putting on a show even if they got knocked about a bit - I smiled at your autumnal/past it comment, it’s a fine line! The trees are wonderful at this time of year though and your Ash and Mulberry are v handsome.
