LATE AUGUST IN THE GARDEN

So here we are already, reluctantly admitting that it may be nearly the end of the Summer, and those long hot days (too few!) are perhaps behind us.

But looking on the bright side, there is still much of interest in the garden and here is a little selection of what's been growing here.

1. A Plate of Vegetables

Here are some of the vegetables picked this week.  The potatoes are Desiree, and the tomatoes include Black Russian and Marmande.

Of course, there were also a few courgettes I forgot to pick which turned into giants, but they wouldn't fit on the plate.

2. Japanese Anemones

Almost obligatory at this time of year are the Japanese Anemones.  These hitched a lift into the garden with something I bought from an Open Gardens plant stall.

3. Salvia Amistad

I talked about pots last week, and this plant did get a mention then.  It's back again this week because the flowers have obligingly opened up somewhat more.  It's a lovely rich colour, but I do find it a little difficult to mix with other plants successfully.

4. Helianthus 'Lemon Queen'

Scrolling down, I'm thinking that perhaps Amistad would look rather dramatic with this Helianthus 'Lemon Queen', although its perhaps a little too dramatic for my taste.

I'm hoping these flowers stick around for a while because there should be a nice blue aster flowering soon to complement them.

5. Dahlia 'David Howard'

'David Howard' is an old favourite in this garden, as I'm sure it is in many of yours.  It's a fantastic colour and is complemented so well by the dark leaves,

6. A Little Project

After ten or so years, the gate posts in the Potager have unfortunately rotted through and need to be replaced.  This means digging out the concrete that was used to cement them in.  It's hard work.
Mr B, not me, is doing it.  The replacements are sturdier and hopefully will last well.

That's all I have room for this week.  I'll be mostly tidying this weekend.  Cutting back the plants that are looking past their best and picking some more giant courgettes.  Thanks as always to the Propaagator for hosting Six on Saturday.

  1. Very nice plate of seasonal vegetables! You will see the size of one of my Marmande: a monster!
I reallly like your helianthus 'Lemon Queen' ; in a border with blue or purple flowers that would look great too.

  2. Aagh, you remind me of our rotting pergola. It was on the list to sort out this year but not an iota of action has been taken. Lovely to have the veg coming through now and I do like the colour of 'David Howard'. I have used 'Amistad' behind 'Darcey Bussell' roses and loved the combination but sadly lost all the SAs over last winter.

  4. I think your Amistad would look lovely with the Helianthus. In a garden I visited this week I saw it growing with bright yellow Helenium, and also the same Helianthus next to Eupatorium purpureum, both of which were attracting the bees. Your veg looks delicious, sadly neither my tomatoes or aubergines did anything this year.

    1. My Eupatorium has attracted the attention of the S&Ss and sadly won't be visited by any bees.

  5. David Howard is rather splendid. I remember seeing some Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' at Ford Abbey last year. Beautiful.

    1. They are both well worth a place in the garden.

  6. A great veg harvest there, sadly I got neither tomatoes nor courgettes this year, not a great veg year for me. Lemon Queen is lovely, as is David Howard, I love orange at this time of year. I saw S. Amistad look very good with dun-coloured grasses on a French garden blog last year.

    1. That's another winning combination for the Amistad. It sounds very sophisticated.

  7. Those vegetables look wonderful. Perfect for a garlicky dish of ratatouille! I have Amistad as well and it’s one of my best salvias, constantly in flower from October until the frosts arrive.

  8. Such a lovely dahlia, and a great harvest picture too. I wonder whether the Amistad would look good with the pale anemones above?

  9. There really are few dahlias, or any other plant, which can match the beauty and colour combination between foliage and flower as we find in 'David Howard'. It really is quite excellent.

  10. Maybe I ought to have a David Howard in my Dahlia bed. So many good ones and so little space!

    1. Rather like tulips I find. I start off thinking I know what I want to order but after half an hour with a catalogue I'm bedazzled by the choice.
